Suren Erkman PhD
President

Suren studied Philosophy and Biology at the Geneva University and holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences at the University of Technology of Troyes (France). After working several years as scientific and economic journalist, Suren created several companies: the Institute for Communication and Analysis of Science and Technology (ICAST), Ecologie Industrielle Conseil (EIC, Paris) and the Resource Optimization Initative (ROI, Bangalore). Suren is Professor at the Lausanne University (IPTEH) and heads the industrial ecology group.

Laurent Cuénoud MSc in Physics, license in pedagogy
Chief Executive Officer

With over 15 years of professional experience of which 10 years experience in the development of an international IT consulting group (up to 120 employees), Laurent is an energetic and enthusiastic business contributor. Developing business with large companies, he has strengthened a valuable range of skills. As of 2008, he decided to move towards the sustainable development domain for ethical reasons. He started coaching greentech companies on their strategy and organization, developing at the same time business opportunities for clean tech products and services. After 6 months dedicated in reinforcing SOFIES' strategy, Laurent Cuénoud assumes the position of Chief Executive Officer since October 2010. His main goal is to continue developping SOFIES' services to companies and public communities.

Benoît Charrière MSc in Geography
Administrative and financial director

Benoît has a Master in Geography from the Fribourg University (Switzerland) and worked for 2 years in a city planning agency (Local Agenda 21). He spent 3 years in Czech Republic (2005-2008), working for the Charles University Environment Center and collaborating with the Swiss Embassy on scientifics events. Benoît contributes in SOFIES with his experience in industrial estates management, regional development and stakeholders analysis.

Guillaume Massard PhD in environmental sciences, Msc in environmental engineering
Scientific director

Guillaume Massard has a Master in Environmental Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and a PhD in environmental science from the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Switzerland. His research in the field of industrial ecology and industrial symbiosis from 2006 and 2011 has allowed for the development and application in Switzerland of procedures and tools to implement IE. He is also a member of the International society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) and contributes to teaching programs at UNIL, EPFL and in several universities in Switzerland, France and China.
At SOFIES, Guillaume is project director for sustainable resource management, industrial symbiosis, material flow analysis, industrial development and planning, strategic environmental assessment, waste management and logistic of natural resources' services

David Rochat MSc in Environmental Engineering
Marketing and Sales director

David graduated with a Master in Envrionmental Engineering in EPFL. He began his career as a scientific collaborator in the Industrial Ecology and Life Cycle Group (EPFL), before joining the Trafic and Transport Office of Geneva. Since 2005, he is coordinating international cooperation projects for the Swiss Materials Science and Techology Institute (EMPA) on electronic waste management (in India, Senegal, Morocco). At SOFIES, David is in charge of projects linked with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Mass Flow Analysis (MFA).

Ana Gonseth MSc in Environmental Engineering
Consultant
and HR assistant

With a Master in Environmental Engineering from EPFL, Ana joined SOFIES in February 2008, after a work experience with ICAST. As a project manager, Ana is specialized in industrial symbiosis detection, in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and mass flow analysis (MFA) applications.

Frédéric Sciacca MSc in Environmental Engineering
Consultant

EPF Engineer graduated in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Frédéric is specialized in environmental bioprocesses. He worked on several projects including industrial smoke treatment and water management in an engineer consulting office in Geneva, before leading projects in West Africa (Ivory Coast, Burkina) on water supply and treatment. He is currently project manager in SOFIES in order to bring his technical expertise on waste and water management.

   

 

Charlotte Thevenet Ing. Green Chemistry ENSCM
Consultant

Charlotte joined SOFIES in April 2009 to do her 'end of studies internship' for the Chemistry National Superior School of Montpellier, where she acquired knowledge in chemistry for sustainable development. Charlotte has already done some other internships in environmental assessment labs and in a pharmaceutical company. As project manager, Charlotte is working on metabolism analysis and industrial symbiosis with specific emphasis on chemical sector.

Laetitia Carles MSc in Environmental Engineering
Consultant

Laetitia joined SOFIES in August 2010, after graduating in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from EPFL, where she conducted her master’s thesis on modelling dynamic global lithium stocks and flows at the world scale from 2010 to 2200. At SOFIES, Laetitia leads projects related to regional development, industrial symbiosis detection and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Clément Guyot MSc in Sciences of the Environment
Consultant

After studying Biology in France, Scotland and California, Clément obtained his master’s degree from the University of Québec at Montréal, Canada. He spent a year working in Germany and joined SOFIES in January 2011. He takes part in multiple projects of industrial ecology, CSR, and environmental assessments for public communities and companies.

Anahide Bondolfi MSc in Environment
Consultant

After a Bachelor in Biology, Anahide obtained a Masters in Environmental Sciences at the University of Lausanne. During her Masters thesis, she developped in collaboration with the Swiss Materials Science and Techology Institute (EMPA) an e-waste valorisation model in South Africa. Anahide has joined SOFIES in august 2011 after 4 years as Project manager at the Investigation Office for Recycling and Sustainability in Lausanne (BIRD) where she was specialised in waste management consulting and communication.

Jérôme Laffely MSc in Environmental Engineering
Consultant

After an exchange year in Granada (Spain), an internship and a Master Thesis in the domain of electronic waste recycling in South Africa, Jérôme graduated in 2007 from EPFL with a MSc in Environmental Engineering. He joins the construction material company Holcim at Corporate level in their Alternative Resources Business Department. He acquires commercial and negotiation skills in the waste and alternative resources business assisting the implementation industrial symbiosis projects in various local Companies of the Holcim Group. He has worked in Central America, the US and Europe in collaboration with ETH, GIZ, local environmental ministries and various stakeholders.
Joining SOFIES in November 2011, Jérôme will strengthen the link to the German speaking market and use his expertise in various national and international assignments.

Luc Jaquet MA in Development Studies
Consultant

After Spanish and Chinese studies (including one year in Shanghai), Luc studied at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Graduate Institute, Geneva). Taking advantage of his experience as a project officer in an international NGO working in the field of cleaner production and environmental economics, Luc conducted his thesis on the current implementation of a "circular economy" in China, an approach based on industrial ecology principles. In 2011, Luc joined SOFIES and takes part in the development of industrial ecology projects abroad.

Katarina Tosic MSc in Applied Genetics

Katarina is completing her MSc in Applied Genetics at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. For the past decade she has taken an active role in environmental issues in Serbia, focusing on sustainable development and capacity building, and most recently taking part in projects in the field of e-waste management. Katarina represents SOFIES in Serbia since 2010 and has contributed to various international projects.

Megha Shenoy PhD in Ecology, MSc in Biological Sciences

Megha is the research director of Resource Optimization Initiative (ROI), Bangalore, India. She is also a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University, USA. Megha completed her Masters and PhD at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India and a post doctoral fellowship at the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University, USA. At ROI Megha co-ordinates and plans its research activities. She is also oversees its outreach activities that includes coordination with stakeholders interested in implementing recommendations from ROI's research.

Deepali Sinha MSc in International Management
External expert

Deepali holds a BA in Economics from the University of Pune, India and an MSc in International Management from the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland. She has over 7 years of specialist experience in e-waste, having started her e-waste research in 2004. She continues her research on e-waste, looking specially at modelling consumer behaviour and technological change to forecast future e-waste quantities. Currently based in London, UK, she is a Research Associate with the United Nations University at the secretariat of the StEP (Solving the E-waste Problem) Initiative. Previously, she has also been a consultant to EMPA and UNEP on their projects in India.

 

 

SOFIES collaborates also with around twenty of external staff in addition to highly qualified specialists in specific domains.
